Dental Care

Healthy teeth. Healthier lives.

Why Dental Health Is Important Read More Dental disease is one of the most common conditions seen in dogs and cats, and it often develops quietly. What may begin as mild plaque buildup can progress to painful infection, tooth loss, and even damage to internal organs if bacteria enter the bloodstream.

Routine dental evaluations allow us to identify problems early and address them before they become more serious. Protecting your pet's oral health is an essential part of maintaining their overall wellbeing.

Signs of Dental Disease

Pets rarely show obvious signs of oral discomfort, so it is important to recognize subtle changes. Indicators of dental disease may include:

Signs to Watch For

Start by ensuring that you understand and follow our take-home instructions and providing your pet with medication if necessary. If you have any questions about your pet’s care or notice any changes, do not hesitate to call us.

  • Bad breath that does not improve
  • Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
  • Difficulty chewing or favoring one side of the mouth
  • Reduced interest in hard food or treats
  • Loose, chipped, or discolored teeth
  • Swelling around the face or jaw

Home Dental Care

You play an essential role in your pet’s dental health. Regular brushing, dental chews, and water additives can help slow the buildup of plaque between professional cleanings.

Brushing

Daily brushing with a pet safe toothpaste and toothbrush or finger brush is the most effective way to prevent dental disease. Starting this routine early in life makes it easier for pets to adapt.

Dental Chews

Approved dental chews can assist in minimizing tartar accumulation between professional cleanings.

Water Additives

Dental rinses or additives may be recommended to help reduce bacteria and freshen breath.

Prescription Dental Diets

Some pets benefit from specially formulated dental diets designed to promote cleaner teeth and healthier gums.

Our team can show you the best techniques for brushing your pet’s teeth and recommend products that carry the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) seal of approval..

Professional Dental Cleanings

Even with diligent home care, most pets will require professional dental cleanings throughout their lives. These procedures are performed under anesthesia to allow for a complete and thorough cleaning above and below the gumline.

Dental cleanings are typically scheduled as same day procedures, and your pet is carefully monitored throughout the process.

1

Before the Procedure

Prior to anesthesia, pre anesthetic bloodwork is recommended to evaluate organ function and ensure your pet can safely undergo the procedure.

For safety reasons, pets should not have food or water after midnight the evening before their scheduled cleaning. Bringing a familiar blanket or comfort item can help reduce stress during their visit.

2

During the Cleaning

During the procedure, ultrasonic instruments are used to remove plaque and tartar buildup. Teeth are then polished to create a smooth surface that helps slow future accumulation.

If severely damaged or infected teeth are discovered, extractions may be recommended. We will communicate with you regarding any additional treatment needed.

3

After the Procedure

When your pet is discharged, you will receive detailed instructions for at home care. Depending on the treatment performed, temporary diet adjustments or activity restrictions may be advised to support proper healing.
