Wellness & Prevention

Better care for the pets who mean the most.

Wellness Exams
Read More “Longer lives and healthier pets” begin with a wellness exam. A wellness exam is an annual checkup for your companion where the veterinarian performs a thorough nose-to-tail evaluation, examining the eyes and ears, mouth, skin and lymph nodes, heart, lungs, body temperature, and weight.

Routine exams help enhance both the length and quality of your pet’s life. Your veterinarian can recommend and tailor a care plan based on your pet’s breed, age, lifestyle, and overall health status. When combined with diagnostic testing, a wellness exam provides a comprehensive view of your pet’s health and allows for early detection of disease.

Establishing care with German Flatts Veterinary Clinic also provides access to timely appointments, visit reminders, convenient medication refills, and helps us respond more efficiently in the event of an emergency.

Vaccines

At first, your puppy or kitten receives protective particles called antibodies from their mother, which help them fight infection. These antibodies are transferred while in the womb and through nursing. However, by 6–8 weeks of age, those antibody levels begin to decline, reducing their ability to protect against various infections.

At this stage, additional protection is needed. Vaccines stimulate the immune system to produce its own antibodies. Most vaccines require a series of doses to achieve full immunity, as outlined in our vaccine protocol. Once the initial puppy or kitten vaccine series is completed, your pet will need to return annually, provided they remain current on vaccinations, to keep their immune system functioning at its best.

You will receive helpful yearly reminders to stay on schedule.

Preventative Screening Test

External Parasites

The 4Dx snap test is an in-hospital blood test that provides results in approximately 8 minutes. This screening evaluates six vector-borne diseases. We test your dog for Heartworm, Lyme, Ehrlichia canis, Ehrlichia ewingi, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and Anaplasma platys.

You may not recognize all of these names, but testing is important because ticks in our region can transmit these diseases. With the exception of heartworm, which is spread by mosquitoes, all of these illnesses are transmitted by ticks.

Fecal Examinations

Fecal examinations are performed to determine whether your dog or cat has intestinal parasites such as hookworms or roundworms. Parasites can cause discomfort and irritation, may lead to more serious health concerns, and in some cases can be passed to family members.

Age-Based Bloodwork Panels

Complete blood count (CBC), metabolic profile, and thyroid hormone testing.

Certificates

Each rabies vaccination includes a certificate that should be kept for your personal records.

Required for certain types of travel.

The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals is the recognized certifying organization that evaluates and determines whether a dog may develop hip problems.
